Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
Flight Details
The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
