France will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major step forward, coming after a short-lived change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Now French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
